Streets of SimCity is a racing and vehicular combat computer game developed and published by Maxis in 1997. One of the main attractions of the game is the ability to explore cities created in SimCity 2000 by car.

Like SimCopter, this game is playable in full 3D and the player's vehicle can be controlled using a keyboard, a joystick, or a gamepad. The game's network mode is also a notable feature in which deathmatches can be played with seven other individuals.

This was the last game made by Maxis before they were bought out by Electronic Arts that same year.

Why It Sucks

  1. It feels like it was rushed to cash in on not only the success of Interstate '76, but also Twisted Metal.
  2. Awful car handling that is almost on par with Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, like your car feels more like a magnet on the road.
  3. Broken and weird physics, like being able to destroy buildings in one touch, or your car bouncing a lot upside down.
  4. Limited selection of vehicles. In fact, there are only 5 cars to choose from.
  5. Ugly 3D graphics. Even Interstate '76 had better graphics, and that came out the same year as this.
  6. The frame rate, in particular, is really bad and it drops a lot during the action, even on better PCs.
  7. False advertising: You can't drive the Ford Thunderbird in the game as it shows on the box cover, the opening cutscene and the menu.
  8. Glitches: Opponents will fly in the air, you'll randomly appear on top of buildings, the road will launch you in the air, etc.
  9. The game will often crash for no reason, even if you play it with the recommended system requirements.
  10. The AI drivers are completely braindead, as they sometimes won't fight back or even can drive into buildings.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Despite the game being broken, it's still really fun to play and it's nice to just rush through your cities without following the goals.
  2. The idea of being able to drive around your city in 3D is pretty cool.
  3. Good music composed by Jerry Martin, the same composer behind The Sims and SimCity.
  4. Good customization in terms of changing paint jobs and installing parts.

Reception

Lazy Game Reviews made a review of this game and bashed the game for it's awful car handling, bad graphics, and all its bugs and crashes but still praised the game for being lots of fun in its own right no matter how bad the graphics are, how bad the cars handle, and how many times it just bugs out on you and he ended the video by saying "Streets of Simcity is just awful and that is why I recommend it."

Gamespot gave this game a review score of 4.4 out of 10 with this statement "If you've ever played Activision's Interstate '76, you'll no doubt notice its influence in Streets of SimCity."
