Don't think this game on the PC is the Spider-Man 2 game that was on consoles. It isn't the same game!
Genre: Action
Platforms: PC
Release Date: 2004
Developer: The Fizz Factor
Publisher: Activision
Franchise: Spider-Man
Previous Game: Spider-Man: The Movie
Next Game: Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 2 is an open world action adventure game loosely based on the film of the same name. They are follow-ups of the game Spider-Man: The Movie, and the series is followed by Spider-Man 3. These games were published by Activision for many different systems in 2004. Upon release, the game received positive reviews and is considered the best Spider-Man game ever by fans. However, the praise was for the home console versions, the PC version was negatively received for reasons this page will cover.

Why This Port Sucks

  1. None of the game trailers have shown that the PC was going to get a completely different game, a case of false advertising.
  2. Extremely simplistic controls, you move with the W-A-S-D keys, dodge with Spacebar, Right click to jump, and Left click for everything else (attacking, shooting web, etc)
  3. There is a spider pointer on Spider-Man's head which determines which action is made, meaning if there was no action written there, you're not doing anything.
  4. Unlike the console versions, you can't swing on the side of buildings, instead, you have to find a swing icon in order to swing.
  5. The story is extremely short, you can beat it in less than 4 hours.
  6. Poor voice acting, especially Tobey Maguire who sounds as if he wants nothing to do with this game.
  7. Poor animations that the characters repeat over and over again.
  8. The FMV cutscenes have frame rate issues.
  9. Sub-par graphics, even for 2004 standards.
  10. When you defeat enemies, they blink out of existence with a static effect that makes you feel as if you're playing some sort of "Spider-Man in The Matrix" mod.
  11. There's no freedom in this version because there are invisible walls everywhere that tell you "There's no need to go this way".
  12. You can only climb a certain height because there's an invisible ceiling that prevents you from going any higher.
  13. The boss fights in the game are, for the most part, dumb and lame. It certainly doesn't help that the game pauses before each fight and spells out exactly what you need to do to win before every single fight. This feature and the one-button gameplay may have you thinking that the game was intended for kids.
  14. You earn "Hero Points" but they are completely useless as there is no store to buy anything with them.
  15. The game has some music, but it basically just fades into the background and stays there.
  16. Lots of game glitches such as being able to fall off a moving train.

The Only Redeeming Quality

The music for the most part, is awesome, such as the credits music performed by The Distillers.

Reception

The PC version received negative reviews from critics and fans alike. Many fans criticized the watered down gameplay and short campaign, Jeff Gerstmann gave the PC version a 5/10 and said that the gameplay in Spider-Man 2 on PC is stripped down to a fault. Many argued the PC should've instead received a port of the console versions.
