Skate Jam (formerly Tony Hawk's Skate Jam) is a free-to-play mobile skateboarding video game developed and published by Maple Media. It is the first and only Tony Hawk's game not published by Activision as their contract expired in 2015. Released for iOS on December 13, 2018, and then for Android on February 1, 2019.

Why It Sucks

  1. Despite being a Tony Hawk's game, he is only partially playable from the beginning, you play the tutorial as Teen Tony Hawk and in further sessions your character becomes the Birdman while the special bar is active. To play as Tony Hawk normally you have to purchase a Pro Pack valued in 15$.
  2. Generic premade skaters without any customization. You only have one at the start; the rest are locked behind virtual paywalls, which is ridiculous considering that the original games had so much of the skaters available from zero.
  3. It features online competitive events but they are also locked behind virtual paywalls, there is a monthly paid with real money subscription to get unlimited access to these events.
  4. There are three types of skate styles: Park, Street and Vert, each one of them provides diverse bonuses, you only start with one deck with one skate style, to get the others you have to purchase other decks with virtual money and the decks which include the three skate styles are more expensive and some of them costs real money.
  5. Most of the levels are bland and uninspired with some dead zones and even bugs, glitches and broken physics.
  6. Unlike previous Tony Hawk's games, there is no overtime to continue with your combos, once the time is over your combo is too.
  7. There are not iconic level of the original franchise as the Warehouse or School II.
  8. Inconsistent gameplay. It is possible to play well, however it is also possible to unintentionally messing up with the controls.
  9. The Free Skate mode is senselessly unlocked by completing all goals of a respective course.
  10. Abusive pop-up advertisements. There are ads after a session, and while you progress there are ads after and before a session. You have to pay the pro pack to get rid of them.
  11. There is also a glitch when an advertisement can sometimes mute the game.
  12. This game in fact is a recycling of a trilogy of skateboarding mobile games, the original Skateboard Party trilogy was originally developed by RatRod Studios, company which would be later acquired by Maple Media to mix the three games recycling the levels and skater models.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. It features the classic goals format that characterized the THPS franchise.
  2. Nice amount of courses, having 12 in total.
  3. Despite the inconsistency, the gameplay is still decent.
  4. The soundtrack is decent.
