A setup wizard is a file that allows the user to install a specific program, file, etc. In this article, we are going to talk about setup wizards used for game ROMs, in short ROM setup wizards.

Most notable examples of ROM download websites that use setup wizards are RomsMania and CoolROM.

Why They Suck

  1. First of all, these setup wizards can advertise viruses. Some of them can be very dangerous.
  2. If you're not careful, you might end up clicking on the "accept" button to install the viruses by accident.
    • At least of course, there is a "decline" button you need to click to avoid downloading the virus, and you can download your game without having viruses installed on your device.
  3. You can't even execute them while you're disconnected from the Internet.
  4. You could literally find safe websites that use .zip or .7z files instead of setup wizards for ROMs, like CDRomance and WowRoms, so there's no point of installing ROM games from these setup wizards whatsoever for all of these reasons.
  5. Unfortunately, now, some websites that used to be legit like CoolRom and RomsMania now have these on their website instead. Thankfully, they are optional on RomsMania if you click browser download on the more options tab under the download button.

Tips to Avoid Malicious ROM sites

  1. If you see that the website is installing a .exe file instead of a .zip file, cancel the download imminently and exit the website. Alternatively, if you didn't cancel it quick enough, delete the file immediately.
  2. Get a strong anti-virus such as Norton 360.
