Pokemon Unite (stylised as Pokemon UNITE) is a multiplayer battle arena game developed by TiMi Studio Group and published by The Pokemon Company for mobile devices and by Nintendo for Nintendo Switch. It is a free-to-play game that requires microtransactions. It was released on July 21, 2021 for the Nintendo Switch and September 22, 2021 for mobile devices.

Bad Qualities

  1. This game is notorious for microtransactions, this is where players can enhance their Pokémon using a booster system or buy support items, making it a pay-to-win game. However, those items can be gained through gameplay as well.
  2. The roster is unbalanced, similar to the infamous Version 2.0 of Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, it contains too many Attacker Pokémon and a few Speedster Pokémon.
    • Devs could have added several Speedster Pokémon like Swellow, Crobat, Weaville, Luxray, Dragapult, or Blaziken, making it a much more balanced roster, not this.
  3. There are only four stages to choose from, which is disappointing, with half of them lacking gimmicks.
    • In addition, half of the stages contain 5 minutes, while others contain 10 minutes to play the game, and there is no option to change the timer.
    • However, new modes are released sometimes, such as Boss Rush.
  4. Like Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, this game is a grindfest where players can upgrade held items after winning a game or by using microtransactions to enhance items.
  5. The price of new Pokémon is always inflated right now being at 14.000 coins, while when the game started it used to be only 8.000. This is a huge problem, as players can only achieve 2.100 coins per week, without counting login bonuses.
    • Also, after Mew comes out, all new Pokémon will only be accessible through real money purchases for a week, before being available for 14.000 coins again.

Good Qualities

  1. The cinematic intro of this game is decent.
  2. The graphics and the soundtrack score are really good.
  3. The idea of making a game that resembles basketball is a decent concept, but executed quite badly and there could have been a better mechanic to resolve this.
  4. The animations of the Pokémon are unique, unlike Masters EX where they reuse animations from the 3DS and Sword and Shield.
  5. At least, thanks to recent updates, more modes are available, as well as the new medal system, which is obtainable only trough gameplay.

Reception

This game received mixed reviews due to the purpose of using microtransactions as part of a pay-to-win gameplay, scoring 70/100 on Metacritic, 7/10 on Gamespot, Shacknews, and Destructoid, 6/10 on IGN, and 8/10 on Game Informer. The user reviews are negative, with a score of 3.7/10.
