Pokémon Café Mix is a free-to-play puzzle video game developed by Genius Sonority and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS in June 23, 2020

You, Leah and her Eevee are running a Pokemon Cafe, you complete orders by doing puzzles and after you earn enough stars for a certain Pokemon, they will be recruited to your team.

Bad Qualities

  1. While the concept of you running a Pokemon Café is a great idea, it is nothing but advertisement for the actual cafe itself.
  2. Very small amount of Pokemon, there are only 41 Pokemon that appear in the game.
    • 5 of them are actually alternative costumes, 3 for Pikachu, 1 for Eevee, and 1 for Lucario.
    • Charizard despite appearing in the game, is only in the opening video of the game. And is unplayable.
    • Many of the Pokemon can only be obtained during events, in which many of them can be hard to recruit unless you play the game long enough. However some events require you to join a team, which can also tend to be hard if you aren't active.
    • Originally there were going to be 67 Pokemon in the game, but was later reduced to 13-20 Pokemon at launch due to data-miners leaking the Pokemon online before release.
  3. Poor moderation, they can sometimes ban you from joining teams on your save file. Resulting you into starting over again just to join a team for a event.
    • If you are banned from joining teams, this makes Snorlax, Mimikyu, Galarian Slowpoke, Chansey, and Holiday Lucario impossible to obtain since they can only be obtained if you join a team. Making you lose your chance to get these Pokemon Recruited.
  4. Bugs and Glitches, such as powerups appearing out of bounds in a level.
  5. The gameplay is extremely simple, all you do is connect a bunch of Pokemon icons together to complete a set of tasks to complete the level. Some levels can tend to be easy to hard.
    • Despite this, sometimes the levels require a big amount of icons connected at one time, removing some required items such as honey cubes, tomatoes in the basket, popcorn kernels, and more. In which sometimes can be impossible to complete, unless you use powerups.
    • When you have no turns left, the game will freeze the puzzle and ask the player to pay 900 Golden Acorns. If you have a hard puzzle and you are close to completing it, you have no choice to spend your acorns. Or you have to restart the level from the beginning.
  6. Heavy use of micro-transactions, in which is used for Golden Acorns, powerups, and the 4 alternative costumes for Pikachu and Eevee.
    • Despite the powerups being included in the shop, they are only 1 time use. Meaning you are spending money on a powerup for a single level, but if you lose the level using that powerup. You lost that powerup, and are required to spend more money on Acorns to get more of them.
    • The game has a 100,000 Golden Acorn limit, meaning you have to use the Golden Acorns before trying to get more of them. This was possibly done to prevent big purchases done by kids using their parent's money on their account.
  7. This game has a stamina system, if you end up losing all 5 of your hearts. You have to ether wait 2 Hours to get all of them back, or spend 900 Acorns to fully restore them.
  8. Recruiting Pokemon in your cafe can be hard, due to the player requiring to get a certain amount of stars. In which most of the time the player will earn 1-3 stars, which is barely enough for the Pokemon to be recruited. Lucario requires 18 stars to be recruited, in which can take a very long time to do.
    • The game very commonly gives you Pokemon that you already recruited coming back to your cafe, just to improve their level. In which can make recruiting Pokemon take longer, and lose the chance of getting a event Pokemon. This could be easily changed by allowing the player to invite the recruited Pokemon to the cafe, so they can get the other Pokemon they need to recruit.
  9. Updates for the game barely add any content, besides new events and bug fixes.
    • Some updates for the game tend to redo previous events for old Pokemon, in which can get old for the players who already got the Pokemon recruited.
      • A example of this is the Mimikyu Team Event, which started in October 21st, 2020 and ended on November 4th, 2020 in which was during the Halloween season. But the event was redone on March 10th in which Leah is still wearing the Halloween Outfit, despite it being way too early for Halloween.
  10. This game can only be played on the touch screen, meaning the Nintendo Switch controllers are mostly useless for this game.

Good Qualities

  1. Great relaxing soundtrack composed by Tsukasa Tawada, in which composed the soundtracks for the GameCube Pokémon Titles.
  2. Pretty art style for the Pokemon, the cafe itself, and items. Which can be appealing to kids and adults alike.
    • Charizard himself in the opening video, looks cute.
  3. The game does tell the user about micro-transactions being optional upon launching the game. While you have to use them if you are stuck in a level.

Pokémon Café Mix received "mixed or average reviews" according to the review aggregator Metacritic. It was praised by critics for its art style, deemed "adorably nostalgic" by TheGamer's Abby Espiritu, and also praised by NintendoLife's Chris Scullion for its "easy to learn" matching mechanic. The game was mainly criticized because it was only playable with touchscreen, making Switch play uncomfortable. It was also criticized by Nathan Ellingsworth of SwitchPlayer for “an eventual sluggish pace”, and gave the game a score of 3/5.

I honestly enjoy the game just the cute art style! My only problem is sometimes when I try to combine the same Pokémon Icon it sometimes thinks I finish which is a little ridiculous. But I honestly just enjoy it. Just my opinion.
