PeTA Browser games were controversial internet browser games created by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA), a highly controversial and the most notorious animal rights group. These games parodied video games, often Nintendo games, in an attempt to force their beliefs concerning animal cruelty on other people.
After the release of Super Mario 3D Land, PeTA responded to Nintendo by saying that Mario was wearing the skin of a Tanuki (Japanese Racoon Dog). PeTA later created a video game called Mario Kills Tanooki to draw attention to the real-life killing of raccoon dogs for their fur. After it was released, people sent all sorts of negative messages to PeTA, saying they were hypocritical for creating a video game that highlights animal abuse so PeTA apologized for the mistake.
PeTA took on the Pokémon series with Pokémon Black and Blue, a parody of Pokémon Black and White that focuses on animal fighting and experimentation. In role-playing-style battles, the player controls a Pikachu who escapes its trainer, Cheren. Pikachu first fights Cheren and then moves on to other Trainers in order to rescue their Pokémon from ownership. Pikachu recruits these Pokémon to its cause, as well as the sympathetic Nurse Joy. A sequel, Pokémon Red, White, and Blue, followed in 2013. The game suggests that Nintendo's continual release of Pokémon games reduce humans' empathy for animals. The game stars Pikachu and Miltank, who battle McDonald's characters like the Hamburglar in a crusade against the rare but ongoing practice of meat production in the Unova region.
List of games
WARNING: Being from PeTA, these games contain propaganda and lots of blood and gore. Search and play them at your own risk.
- Make Fred Spew (2001) - a very simplistic game where you make a lactose intolerant guy named Fred puke when you feed him milk-based products.
- Save the Chicks (2003)
- Revenge of the PETA Tomatoes (2004)
- Lobster Liberation (2004) - Parodies Frogger
- Super Chick Sisters (2007) - Parodies Super Mario Bros. and revolves around two chicks rescuing Pamela Anderson from Colonel Sanders and KFC.
- Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals (2008) - A parody of Cooking Mama, in this game you prepare a grotesque Thanksgiving meal, and on the second part you prepare a vegetarian tofu meal.
- New Super Chick Sisters (2009) - Parodies New Super Mario Bros. and is a sequel to the original Super Chick Sisters.
- Super Tofu Boy (2010) - A parody of Super Meat Boy. In this game, Bandage Girl ditches Meat Boy for Tofu Boy, and Meat Boy kidnaps her. It's up to Tofu Boy to rescue her. Tofu Boy was eventually added in an update for Super Meat Boy as a secret joke character as payback for the game.
- Mario Kills Tanooki (2011) - A parody of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 3D Land, you play a skinned tanuki chasing Mario across a Mario level.
- Save Sammy Maze (2011) - A parody of Scary Maze Game. When moving the level has an end, it contains a screamer and shock image.
- Pokémon Black and Blue (2012) - A parody of Pokémon Black and White, you journey with Pikachu in order to save Pokémon from human training.
- Cage Fight: Knock Out Animal Abuse (2013) - Parodies River City Ransom
- Pokémon Red, White, and Blue: Loosely Connected to McDonald's (2013) - A parody of Pokémon Black and White, it's similar to the last game, except the Pokémon are now against McDonald's.
Why They Suck
- Poor controls.
- Many of their games contain violent, bloody, and disturbing imagery, even though their games are supposedly targeted towards children and are based on kid-friendly video game franchises. For example, after you get a badge in Pokémon Black and Blue, it shows real, disturbing, highly graphic footage of animal abuse.
- Poor grasp of the source material they are trying to parody. In Pokémon Black and Blue in particular, even though the writers apparently know that Ghetsis wanted to take over the world all along, they still praise Team Plasma anyway and act like Ghetsis isn't indicative of their true goals. The Final Boss is also a corrupt version of Ash Ketchum even though he's from the anime, not the games. The game depicts Ash as an abusive jerk who never cared for his Pokémon, proving they didn't even bother to get past the first fifteen minutes of the first episode of the anime.
- Sometimes they don't even make their research to justify their games. For example, Super Tofu Boy was made under the assumption that Meat Boy is made out of pig meat, which is completely wrong, as Meat Boy is simply a boy who has no skin.
- One of their games, New Super Chick Sisters, has a Japanese language option which is a straight translation from English to Japanese without any localization to make it consistent with the Japanese Mario games. For example, Bowser isn't called Koopa (クッパ) as he is in Japanese and a line he says that references Super Mario RPG ("Fungah! Foiled again!") is translated directly from English instead of using the Japanese equivalent of the line, which was "Fungya!" (フンギャ!). (Info courtesy of Legends of Localization, article here)
- The games hardly do anything to inform or educate players of the subjects presented other than have random NPCs spout nonsensical dialogue about it.
- A good chunk of the games try to force vegetarianism down the throats of players.
- The games are hypocritical, as they preach not doing harm to or killing animals, yet PeTA killed 81% of animals that came into their Virginia-based shelter in 2014.[1]
- When Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield were announced on February 27, 2019, PeTA thought it would be a good idea to advertise Pokémon Black and Blue on Twitter, this action coming almost a week after they had received severe backlash for insulting the late Steve Irwin on his birthday. Needless to say, the tweet did not receive positive reception.
- They did not do research on the Tanooki suit from the Mario franchise as they believe that it actually comes from the skin of an actual Raccoon when it actually comes from a Super Leaf.
- They decided to parody Cooking Mama when it is a simple cooking game that is completely harmless.
- Some of the between level cutscenes in Super Chick Sisters depict Mario getting tortured in some form or fashion.
- Childhood destruction.
