Infestation: Survivor Stories (formerly known as The War Z) was a horror-themed massively multiplayer online game designed by Sergey Titov, developed by Hammerpoint Interactive, and published by OP Productions. It was released for Microsoft Windows via Steam on December 17, 2012.

The game shutdown its servers on December 16, 2016.

Why It Sucked

  1. False advertising: The developer claimed the game has multiple large worlds which are different sizes, a level up system based on earning skill points, PvE combat, hundred-player servers, and private servers, none of which were in the game.
    • Many of the mechanics are ripped right out of DayZ, and poorly duplicated as well. In fact, this game was originally named The War Z, which is confusingly similar to the name of DayZ and also the zombie film World War Z, which came out six months after the game's release.
  2. Plagiarized content/copy-pasted assets: The in-game pictures are zombie cosplay images found on the internet and most assets in the game came from War Inc., a freemium FPS made by Hammerpoint. War Inc. also suspiciously went out of service before this game's release.
  3. Large amount of microtransactions, costing $20 on top of that.
    • If you actually buy items from the store, beware that all items will vanish upon death; this is not stated anywhere in-game. Therefore, it is possible to gear up on over $100 worth of items then lose them in seconds to a hacker (see below).
  4. Despite being a paid game, it features a respawn timer upon death. This means that hackers and bandits can have more than enough time to loot items from unsuspecting customers. To make things worse, Hammerpoint increased the timer from one hour to four hours in an update without warning, with an option to pay 50GC to revive instantly (usually only to be killed in seconds again). This was eventually taken down due to backlash.
  5. Many of the weapons are underpowered. The few good weapons obtainable are rare and hard to find, in order to make players fork over their money.
  6. Although the fandom never dictates a game’s quality, the community is horrid; most players you'll encounter are hackers, cheaters, and people who attack you on sight.
    • Uncared for by the developers, as they didn't do anything to stop the hackers or fix existing bugs.
      • Developers also censor criticism on their Steam homepage and the game's forums.
  7. Terrible zombie AI. There is no way to sneak past zombies; if you enter their proximity, regardless of if you're in front or behind them, they'll come after you.
  8. Awful graphics that are outdated, especially for a game released in 2012. The zombie models, for example, look more like people in cheap costumes.
  9. Low frame-rate that can sometimes drop to 1 frame-per-second, making the game unplayable.
  10. Simplistic and boring combat. The guns feel more like Airsoft weapons, and the melee combat is even worse.
  11. Agonizingly long respawn times, that can take up to four hours, unless you pay for a instant respawn.
  12. Lifeless worlds that feel copied and pasted from the Arma 2: DayZ mod.
  13. FOV can't be adjusted, which can cause motion sickness.
  14. Many bugs and glitches, such as getting stuck in walls, falling out of the world, etc.
  15. There are invisible walls eveywhere, even when there shouldn't be any.
  16. Resources cost large amounts of in-game credits.
  17. Lackluster character customization.


Survival Stories, much like Big Rigs, was heavily panned upon release, and is considered one of the worst video games ever. It has a Metacritic score of 20 based on 13 critic reviews. However, despite its reception, it was a financial success, selling nearly 3 million copies since launch.
