Illusion (Japanese: イリュージョン, Hepburn: Iryūjon), formerly known as Illusion Soft, is a Japanese video game developer specialized in eroge games, founded in 1997. They were infamous for releasing a lot of titles with reused assets (prior 2018), and some of adult-only titles such as Battle Raper and RapeLay.

Originally, their games were not allowed to be sold or used outside Japan, due to the censorship laws, and official support was only given in Japan. However, with the release of Honey Select Unlimited in coordination with the online English erotic game storefront FAKKU, Illusion's policy has since changed. Prior to this change in policy, they were often translated and released in English and other languages by fans.

Bad Qualities

Note: Most of these bad qualities were applied to pre-2018's Illusion.

  1. Prior to 2018, they published a large amount of titles with overpriced price tag for its content. They're also reused several assets in their newer titles as well.
  2. Poor gameplay (especially notable in Battle Raper and RapeLay).
  3. Horrid graphics with extremely poor model quality.
  4. Their games have, at a lot of times, disturbing material or revolve around a disturbing premise (an infamous example is RapeLay), somehow due to poor quality of the graphics it makes the experiences even more uncomfortable.

Good Qualities

  1. Their game engines are quite moddable, many of them having been produced on the Unity engine, and they do nothing to discourage the modding community. In fact, they encouraged their fanbase to translate their game to made it more accessible as well.
  2. Most games were never intended to sell outside Japan, and the ones that have tend to be their "tamer" (in terms of content) games.
  3. After all of hit-or-miss titles, in 2018, they've published Koikatsu, which is one of the best eroge game of all time, which were featured one of the best character customization system, and offered a huge amount of content with "uncensored" patch.
  4. Due to the success of Koikatsu, Illusion has "reformed" themselves by focusing on quality over quantity and put an effort into making games, most notably in AI Shoujo and Honey Select 2.
