Frogger (also known as Frogger: He's Back!) is a remake of the arcade game of the same name. It was developed by SCE Cambridge Studio and published by Hasbro Interactive in 1997 for the PlayStation and Microsoft Windows.

Gameplay

The gameplay is the same as the original arcade game. As Frogger, he must hop in the level to avoid obstacles and collect the 5 baby frogs hidden in the level.

Bad Qualities

  1. This is an example of a game that stays true to its source material in a bad way, for example:
    • There are one-hit deaths, no matter what happens to Frogger.
    • There is a time limit for all levels, however, the length may not be enough for one to find a frog in time and risk losing a life.
    • Every time Frogger dies or he grabs a baby frog, you are sent back to the beginning.
    • All of these development choices make the game very frustrating and a chore to play.
  2. Levels can be a chore to complete, as there is no form of map or anything to see where you are going. Not to mention the camera is close up to Frogger.
    • Some levels recycle a previous level and make it harder, which leads to a lack of variety as well.
  3. Weird graphic design choices, although some of the models (including Frogger) are 3D, some others (including the flies) are 2D sprites.
  4. The multiplayer is split-screen, making it hard to know where you are and what you are doing.
    • In the last multiplayer level, the flag is so hard to reach that you will almost never win.
  5. For some reason, Frogger starts with five lives in the PC version and the PlayStation Demo, but only three in the final PlayStation version.

Good Qualities

  1. A memorable soundtrack, including a very good remix of the original arcade game's theme.
  2. Frogger has some brand new abilities, which are Croaking (which can detect nearby Frogs), Super Jumping (over obstacles), and Licking (which when Frogger licks insects, it can give out extra points).
    • In Retro Zone, if Frogger can find the pink frog and reach a Frog baby with her, the player can get extra points.
  3. In fact, the Retro Zone itself is pretty much the only zone where the faithfulness to the original game would work in this title.
  4. The graphics are pretty decent for the time.
