"[Dynasty Warriors 9] touted itself as an overhaul because it had an "open world". No it didn't. It just had a massive map full of nothing. Full of fucking nothing."
Jim Sterling

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a hack-and-slash action video game developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo. It was released for PlayStation 4 in Japan on February 8, 2018, and for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows in Western markets on February 13, 2018.

Why You Can't Feel the Power of It's Magic

  1. This game has an amount of countless bugs and glitches. For example, various animals spawn and get stuck to the ground.
    • Even when you play on hard mode the enemy AI is poorly programmed.
  2. Due to poorly designed combat, various characters can achieve cheap combos by mashing the same button repeatedly.
  3. The various characters also lack individuality with each playing almost exactly the same. Chen Gong (Lu Bu's adviser and main strategist) in Dynasty Warriors 8 had by default an Art of War Scroll, a really original weapon which could summon soldiers to attack for him. In this game however, he uses a generic chain and sickle.
    • Speaking of the characters, there are also others which you can barely play in the story mode.
  4. There’s a lack of variety for weapons from previous games in the series.
  5. The "open world" is fairly empty and dull with every city looking the same. It’s worse by the fact that is hard to find enemies sometimes.
  6. Lu Bu, the iconic villain of every Dynasty Warriors game was downplayed in this game.
  7. You can climb every wall in the game with the default grappling hook even if it's very tall, unlike earlier Dynasty Warrior games. This also makes Siege Mode lack any real challenge.
  8. This game lacks the co-op, challenge and multiplayer mode unlike the previous games in the series.
  9. With various points stated above, it makes the gameplay became repetitive and boring.
  10. Much like the third game, there is terrible English voice acting.
  11. The Steam version suffered from controller support issues.
  12. Both console versions have mediocre graphics and very poor framerates. Even Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors looked and ran better despite being released on far weaker systems.
    • To add insult to injury, Hyrule Warriors was originally released on the Wii U, ported to the 3DS (with pared down visuals and extra content) and later ported to the Nintendo Switch with the Wii U version’s HD visuals and the 3DS version’s extra content. Fire Emblem Warriors was released simultaneously for the Switch and New 3DS. Both games run better in weak hardware.
      • Furthermore, this game was made with 8th gen consoles/high-end PCs in mind with a supposed brand new game engine and both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X in full effect yet it runs and even looks worse than even previous cross-gen/handheld entries in the series (such as One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, Arslan: The Warriors of Legend, Berserk and the Band of the Hawk, Warriors All-Stars and the Dragon Quest Heroes sub-series).
  13. Many iconic weapons and features from the series were removed from the game as Koei Tecmo said this was to make the game more realistic. Unfortunately, almost all of these weapons and features were released back again as a paid DLC (the DLC is something that was free in other games).
  14. The game seems to be quite expensive as it costs $60 on Steam while dramatically downgraded from previous titles.
  15. A deluxe version wouldn't fix this game since the main core is awful.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. It does ship out of the box with a lot of content that was gated behind DLC in DW8.
  2. While buggy at launch, the developers have been working on it and have been adding new features and fixes that have made it far more stable and playable than at launch.
  3. The open world does allow the player to get a proper scale for how the battles would have looked compared to the limited scale of the previous titles.

Dynasty Warriors 9 received "mixed to average" reviews from critics according to review aggregator Metacritic. It currently holds 4.3 (PS4), 3.8 (Xbox One), and 2.9 (PC) on user reviews, as well as an "Overwhelmingly Negative" reception from players on Steam.

Jim Sterling claimed that it was the "worst Dynasty Warriors game ever made."
