Dexit

The controversy that tainted Game Freak's reputation and plunged the Pokémon community into chaos.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch, it was released on November 15, 2019. They are the first main series games in the eighth generation of the Pokémon franchise, and the second in the series to be released on a home console, the first being Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. During the game's showcase at Nintendo Treehouse live at E3 2019, Producer Junichi Masuda announced one major change that was met with severe negative backlash in which it caused many to turn against the game before it had initially released, as well as spawning a controversy known as Dexit.

What Happened

The announcement

During the 2019 Pokémon Press Conference, Junichi Masuda announced the cloud based storage app Pokémon HOME, the new service that will allow players to transfer and store Pokémon from 3DS's Pokémon Bank, Mobile's Pokémon GO and Switch's Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! and the then upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield. It also allows users to trade Pokémon when using the mobile client.

"So what that means for Sword and Shield is that players will be able to transfer their Pokémon from Pokémon HOME, only if they appear in the Galar region Pokédex."

David Numrich

During the Nintendo Treehouse live at E3 2019 there was a showcase of Pokémon Sword and Shield on the game floor, at the end of the showcase, Junichi Masuda announced that "when the Pokémon HOME service will be live, players will only be able to transfer Pokémon they brought to HOME to Sword and Shield if they appeared within the Galar region Pokédex (in other words the game's regional Pokédex)", which means they will not be able to bring favorites such as their favorite starters (E.G Snivy and Froakie), Ultra Beasts or non Galar Legendaries. The reason for this was for balancing reasons and to make higher quality animation.

Aftermath

This decision announcement was met with a huge shock from fans who referred to it as Dexit (a portmanteau of Brexit and Pokédex) which as a result, the entire Pokémon fandom snapped into anger and started to spam #BringBackNationalDex everywhere on social media. This is also noticable with the YouTube video from the game's showcase at the Nintendo Treehouse livestream with more than 89 thousand dislikes compared to 23 thousand likes. Many fans even called for the games to be delayed until all the Pokémon could be added, unaware that it would also push back the Anime and the TCG.

Seventeen days later, in response to the outcry regarding the removal of certain Pokémon from the games, the Official Pokémon Twitter page made an announcement for Pokémon fans with a link that sent users to the official Pokémon website with a statement from Junichi Masuda that reads:

"Thank you to all of our fans for caring so deeply about Pokémon. Recently, I shared the news that some Pokémon cannot be transferred to Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. I've read all your comments and appreciate your love and passion for Pokémon.

Just like all of you, we are passionate about Pokémon and each and every one of them is very important to us. After so many years of developing the Pokémon video games, this was a very difficult decision for me. I'd like to make one thing clear: even if a specific Pokémon is not available in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, that does not mean it will not appear in future games.

The world of Pokémon continues to evolve. The Galar region offers new Pokémon to encounter, Trainers to battle, and adventures to embark on. We are pouring our hearts into these games, and we hope you will look forward to joining us on this new journey.

June 28, 2019

Junichi Masuda"

Unfortunately this message did nothing to halt the fans anger as they were quick to call out the statement for the lack of any promises for the newer entries in the series who were hoping for future patches, while others were angered that Masuda made a response to the backlash.

Nearly two months after Sword and Shield released, the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass was announced as DLC for the pair on January 9, 2020, consisting of two DLC packs; The Isle of Armor, released on June 17, 2020, and The Crown Tundra, released on October 23, 2020 (October 22, 2020 in North America), both of which introduce two whole new areas to explore, as well as 100 returning Pokémon not previously found in the base game for each pack (221 Pokémon from previous generations (including legendaries) in total were added). The DLC caused further backlash from fans (despite improving upon the game's flaws), leading them to accuse Game Freak of cutting content just to sell it back.

Then again, at least Game Freak's about to patch in more returning Pokemon along with the first DLC in 2 weeks from now.

Too bad we still have to deal with a Premium Plan paywall if we wanted to transfer our favorite Pokemon from Bank to Home (though I did transfer mine to Home with a $3 plan).

If you want your National Dex, play pre-Gen 8 games. Otherwise, the SwSh DLCs (Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra) are your friends.

You do realize all those games are on discontinued systems right? I sold them all for a switch. Sure there is emulators but I can’t find a working 3DS emulator.

I'm happy to say that I finally got my Scolipede in my Shield party on the day it got patched in.

But yeah, many of the people that use the #BringBackNationalDex tag can be pretty toxic and/or make poor decisions during the controversy at times (one person, DistantKingdom made a bad move comparing the SWSH controversy to the Hong Kong protests), not to mention they're putting a lot of distress and pressure on Game Freak throughout the months (I feel bad for joining in on the BBND side).

I get that everyone wants their favorite Pokemon back so they can play SWSH, but seriously, they really need to give Game Freak and especially Junichi Masuda a break.

I think this controversy was pretty stupid. I was also disappointed to hear some Pokèmon were getting cut but that awful #BringBackNationalDex tag just makes regular people that want the old ones to return look bad and toxic.

And that's why I stopped using the #BringBackNationalDex and #GottaPatchEmAll tags now that I had Scolipede in my Gen 8 party (finally).

As for those that didn't get other popular Pokemon like Dragonite or Garchomp along with the first DLC, they need to wait until the next patch that goes with the second DLC instead of constantly harassing Game Freak and/or Junichi Masuda for them.

And just like what that TF&HW page about BBND says, those people are still beating a dead horse, even after a year since last year's E3. /smh

...having played Sword and Shield on my sister's Switch...I can safely say...

This game is the easiest Pokemon game I've ever played. Say what you want about the 3DS games, they HAD challenge.

I get a permanent EXP Share, healing items given to me, escape ropes are now key items, and I can grind my Pokemon to level 100 before Isle of Armor.

Plus, the animations feel lifeless, the world feels lifeless, and overall, I think if I got myself a Switch Lite, I'd get BREATH OF THE WILD, an actual quality game delayed to be the best it can be.

To anyone who highlighted the games' titles at the start of the page; sorry but there is a format pages must follow on the wiki, which doesn't include special colors.

These colors could also being displayed incorrectly on some users and visitors' computers and phones screens, which is another reason why the text must be kept as simple as possible.

Please don't change it back.

Zachiswack posted this comment in his Distantkingdom response video:

"Thanks to Max G for suggesting this pinned comment.

Distant has now clarified that he was not comparing dexit to HK, he was giving an example of a protest that worked.

Even still, I think he should have used another example closer to gaming. Maybe my reading comprehension is bad, but from the original tweet it looked like he was loosely comparing the two. Using a less serious example, say the sonic movie protest, would have been better.

I also wanna thank everyone for commenting. I've gotten a fair amount of constructive criticism and feedback and I'm going to take it and use it moving forward, especially with showing the entire tweet thread for context. I really dropped the ball on that one. I should also be less emotional. Calling the tweet dumb for 4 minutes doesn't really do anything :p

Again, thank you to everyone who's subscribed, watched, commented, etc. I appreciate you all!"

Some people don't want to have to be stuck (in the past) with previous Pokémon games to have the full Pokémon roster.

I can understand not being able to have all Pokémon in the game, but I still don't know the reasoning behind taking out 144 moves like Hidden Power (which a lot of Special Attackers relied on for type coverage).

The dexit hashtag is decent, not all of them were toxic (like jamey who is a nice person) and shiny tropius(who was bullied by a user here). That being said, the amount of toxicity there is an insult to the dexit hashtag, like DistantKingdom and Logan williams.
