ÜberSoldier (in Russia Eastern Front (Восточный Фронт)) is a first-person shooter video game developed by Burut Creative Team and published by CDV Software Entertainment in 2006.

Plot

Karl Stolz is a German soldier who was killed in duty, but then he gets resurrected and acquires supernatural powers. Just before he was indoctrinated by the Nazis, a member of the German Resistance rescued him and changed his loyalties. Karl Stolz now becomes the ÜberSoldier of the German Resistance and he helps them to destroy the "ÜberSoldier fabrication" infrastructure.

Gameplay

The player has the ability to stop bullets with its incorporated shield. The shield retains the bullets until they hit something like a wall or an enemy. Also, if the player deactivates the shield while bullets are caught in it, they will be shot back in reverse trajectory, The player is also able to increase the amount of health if you knife three enemies in a row and the shield duration if you take three headshots in a row.

Why It Sucks

  1. The plot is absurd and makes almost no sense.
  2. While the game runs perfectly on modern pc's, you can't change some of the graphical settings (like the FOV) and set the game in a high resolution by default. You need to get into the game internal files to change them, while this is normal for most of the old pc games, the things you need to do are quite unortodox and bizarre:
    • To change the resolution, you need to multiply the height of your resolution by 65,526 plus width, for example, if you're using a 1080p monitor, the formula would be "1080 * 65526 + 1920", giving you the number 70780800, why would you have to make a strange formula for only changing your resolution?
    • The FOV and the aspect ratio can only be changed through a hex editor and this requires a lot of trial and error, as some numbers can bug the animations and the hands viewmodels.
  3. Aiming is very slow and you can't hit anything if you move because of the moving viewmodel, and since hip firing is just as accurate as using the sights, aiming is almost useless and unnecessary.
  4. After the second half of the game, the difficulty will get incredibly unfair, the enemies have a perfect accuracy and they can kill you in matter of seconds, you almost don't have any kind of surface to take cover and there are a lot of enemy soldiers all over the place, even in the easiest difficulty.
  5. Bad and inconsistent level design, while the first half of the game consists mostly of linear hallways, the second half is all about open areas with only a few spaces to take cover, as said above.
  6. The game has a lot of explosions, some of them are caused by objects like explosive barrels or oxygen tanks, but sometimes there will be an explosion for no apparent reason, like shooting a window with no explosive objects behind it, this wouldn't be a problem normally, but some of these explosions can appear while you're exploring the map or going toward the objective location, resulting in a lot of cheap and unfair deaths.
  7. Grenades blow up really quickly, giving you a very little reaction time if an enemy throws a grenade at you.
  8. Some enemies can spawn tornadoes of dust splinters, they only appear a couple of times in the entire game, but they are very annoying and have more health than the rest of the enemies.
  9. In one of the missions you need to defend a captured submarine and shoot down the other enemy submarines and airplanes, but this mission is, from far, the worst of all, the difficulty feels very artificial, you can't use your shield or take medikits to recover your health and it requieres a lot of trial and error. If you're wondering, you will have to do this for TEN MINUTES.
  10. The game suffers from horrible long loading times, almost at par with most of the Sega CD loading times.
  11. The compass looks very weird, as it has an oval shape.
  12. Awful voice acting.
  13. Lame and boring final boss fight.
  14. No multiplayer support.
  15. The links to download the game are scarce and you can't buy the game in a digital store like Steam.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The graphics are pretty good for its time and they have aged well.
  2. Smooth and well made animations.
  3. The shield is really useful and it can save your life most of the times.
  4. The soundtrack is very decent, specially the main theme, take a listen.
  5. The story can be kinda interesting for some people.
  6. While the sequel is not perfect, it fixes most of the flaws and is more enjoyable.
  7. You can save the game anytime you want.

Reception

ÜberSoldier was generally met with mixed to negative reviews and has a Metacritic score of 57/100. Bob Colayco of GameSpot gave the game a rating of 4.6/10, praising the graphics but criticizing the voice acting, high system requirements, and lack of multiplayer support. Despite the poor reception of the game, the game found recognition in the YouTube community in 2014, following the sequel's release on Steam.
