Doom its a an Fps game developed and released by ID Software in 1993, and became one of the most influential games of all time, the 3DO port that is beign covered in this page was developed by LogicWare and published by Art Data Interactive.

The 3DO port has a really complicated history, and after its release, it has rightfully obtained the fame of the absolute worst port of Doom to any system ever.

Development

Why It Sucks

  1. The most infamous part of this port, is that you play it in a really small screen, at an smaler resolution, than any other port of Doom, even the Snes port allowed you to play in fullscreen.
    • The game has 6 screen sizes but none of them come close to the other ports of the game.
    • there are extra 2 larger resoltions that are hidden behind a cheat code, this is because originally the 3DO company wanted to make a updated system called M2, which had the abilty to play 3DO games at better resolutions and framerates, but the project was cancelled.
  2. The second most infamous part is definetely; The absolutely atrocious framerate most of the time the game barely reaches 20 FPS., and sometimes outright goes to single digits.
    • While lowering the screen size improves the framerate, it never reaches a decent number, no matter the size.
    • Of course since the higher difficulty levels increase the amount of enemies, the already bad framerate becomes worst, making the game almost unplayable at times.
  3. Since this is a port of the Atari Jaguar, there is no Spider Master mind nor Cyberdemon.
  4. While the sound most of the time is decent, there are times that a louder sound will silence others completely or at least partially.
  5. False Adevertising, the back of the box still lists the supposed features that this port originally was going to have, including the FMV cutscenes, and new levels, which of course dont exist in the finish game
  6. The controls are awful:
    • The to switch weapons you must press the strife buttons and C, which is an akward combination and not very precise.
    • The automap is also behind an even less precise combination, in this case C+Start, this one takes at least 3 tries to work
    • The turning is way too slow, is really hard to go in the direction you want, and worst, its makes hard to aim correctly.
    • it doesnt help to the former than going backwards and foward feels really slippery, which makes the movement, a massive pain in the ass
    • The shooting has a delay, and it varies fromweapon to weapon, the worst beign the pistol and the rocket launcher, which have a half second of delay from pressing the button to the character actually shooting.
  7. Independently of the the resolution, the game looks as bad, if not worst than the Snes port, the enemies some of the time are barely visible, and the eintire game looks like a blurry mess of pixels.
  8. The chainsaw is absent from the game.
  9. The A.I of the enemies was completely buchered, many times they dont attack at all, or take years to attack, this makes hard enemies like Cacodemons,killable with punches.
  10. The auto aim is much less precise than in the original game, many times missing things it should had hit.
  11. The cheat codes are ridiculously hard to pull, as you must enter a really long sequence of button presses on the nav map.
  12. When referring to the small screen size, Randy Scott said that the 6 screen sizes were a feature rather than a drawback, and in the interview, said that the game had 6 levels of speed.

Reediming qualities

  1. The game has a fantastic soundtrack.
  2. It has all the levels of the Atari Jaguar unlike the 32X version.
  3. Rebecca Heineman and logicware basically made a miracle making this in 3 months


Reception and aftermath

Needless to say, Doom on 3DO was savaged by critics and gamers and was a massive comercial failure, both thanks to the small 3DO user base and the absolutely abysmal quality of the port, Randy Scott tried to blame the disastrous game on Logicware, however, ID Software themselves, bakced the later.

Art Data when out of business shortly after this release, beign the only game they ever produced.

Shockingly Rebecca Heineman, stated that Randy Scott was borrowing money from none other place than his church to fund the game.

Rebecca Heineman believes that if they had been given 10 weeks more of time, the game could have had a massive improvement.

Miss Heineman uploaded the source code for the 3DO version online so people of the internet try to improve her work, and as a cautionary tale that game development is not an easy task.

A homebrew build by the name of OptiDoom by use Bugo The Cat has appeared online, with the objective of improving the work of Logicware, and making a decent port of the game, and while is in an early state, its showing good results as for now.

Rebecca Heineman still works in the industry as the CEO of her own company Olde Sküül, she also has her own youtube channel.

Randy Scoott, leaved the industry, and founded a chain of music schools, however this were closed, due to criminal proceedings against Scott, which apparently have to do with him comiting lewd acts against female students.
