Koei Tecmo Holdings Co., Ltd., is a Japanese video game holding company created in 2009 by the merger of Koei and Tecmo. Koei Tecmo Holdings owns several companies, the biggest one of those being its flagship game developer and publisher Koei Tecmo Games that was founded in 1978 as Koei Co., Ltd..

Koei Tecmo is known for developing several anime licensed games, such as Attack on Titan and Berserk and the Band of Hawk, as well as other anime-styled games such as the Atelier and Nights of Azur series. A classic platformer series Ninja Gaiden, a fighting game series Dead or Alive. As well as a region-focused titles such as Nobunaga's Ambition and Samurai Warriors for the Japanese market, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Dynasty Warriors for the Chinese market.

Why They Suck Now

  1. Similar to Activision Blizzard, Koei Tecmo is known for milking several franchises they own to death (even before the merge with Tecmo). This can be seen by a huge amount of installments in each franchise which were released every 2 - 3 years, such as 9 Dynasty Warriors titles, 14 Romance of the Three Kingdoms titles, 16 Nobunaga's Ambition titles, and 26 Atelier titles.
  2. They are also infamous for exploiting the DLCs and season passes to the extreme, as they have released a lot of DLCs on every games they have released. Which caused the game price to be inflated to at least around $80 to $120.
    • Most of these DLCs were just a costume DLC as well as several reskinned versions.
    • Most of the DLCs were already pre-loaded into the game.
    • The worst offender of this is Dead or Alive 6, in which Koei Tecmo released over 460 DLCs, which in turn inflated the "full" price of the game into a ridiculous amount of $2,100+.
      • On top of that, they charged $1 for every time you change hair color of the character due to the previous color is instantly discarded after the player changed it. Koei Tecmo would've later "fix" the problem by selling a tickets to allow you to change the hair color for unlimited amount of time.
    • Sometimes, they released the new DLCs and expansion packs without giving it for free for those who've already purchased the season pass.
    • Giving Electronic Arts' involvement with an upcoming AAA monster hunting game (Wild Hearts), this is a monetization hell (mixed with microtransactions abuse) combining the worst worlds of two companies which ironically not what EA Originals means.[1]
  3. They are also known for dissecting several in-game contents and sold it as DLCs, for example:
    • They intentionally dissectted Dead or Alive 5 by releasing the "base" version for free, which is basically the full game but with almost everything locked behind DLC paywalls, in an attempt to hide the price of an actual game.
    • While they claimed that they cut several iconic weapons of the Dynasty Warriors franchise from Dynasty Warriors 9 for "historical reason", they later restored these weapons as DLCs, these DLCs were stuff that were free in previous games.
    • They removed difficulty settings from Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV to be sold as DLCs.
    • Sometimes, they even sell the "power-up kit" to give the player an advantage in their in-game campaign, such as technology unlock as well as more starting money and units.
  4. They are notorious for putting very little effort to port the game from consoles to PC, as evidenced by UI, key mapping, and optimization problem, the worst offenders being Dynasty Warriors 9, Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV.
  5. They are putting less and less effort into newer games in favor of milking the money out of costume DLCs, as evidenced by several Atelier games being reskins of each other, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is filled with artificial difficulty and employing a "costume part" system in Dead or Alive 6 to create a "costume grind" in order to force the player into buying costume DLC to skip the grind. On top of that, they've been abandoning some of their IPs:
    • For Koei, they've completely abandoned the Winback series which helped to revolutionized Third-Person Shooters with their cover system.
    • For Tecmo, they've ignored the Ninja Gaiden franchise and haven't released a new entry since 2014's Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z (with the exeption of releasing a remastered collection, Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection).
  6. They caused Tomonobu Itagaki to leave the company (with rumors saying he got fired), the same person who made Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden (Reboot series) what it is today! His departure is what led to these franchises going downhill as of recently.
  7. Their localization is known for being very poor as they rarely dub their games into English and just keep it in Japanese. Not only that but when they do dub it into English, with the exception of a few, they end up being mediocre or flat-out horrible to listen to.
    • Despite releasing several older titles on Steam complete with English descriptions on their store pages, they didn't localized the games themselves at all.
  8. Some of their anime licensed games were plagued with several problems, such as:
    • Attack on Titan and its sequel is essentially a reskin of Dynasty Warriors 8 which is also plagued with DLCs problem stated above.
    • Fairy Tail suffered from sub-par graphics, Jump Force's level of animation cutscene, and the infamous "censorship patch" which censor various panty shots in the game (despite the original anime being known for mild amount of fanservices).
  9. They rarely, if ever, discount their game's prices at all. Even during various major Steam sales (except the Tokyo Game Show event), they will only dropped the price of their games to up to 10% at best.
  10. They don't seem to have the courage to stand up to SJWs and have often catered towards them. For example, when Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 was announced, Koei Tecmo stated that the game would never be released in the west, due to the possibilities of SJWs and feminists mercilessly attacking the game just for having fanservice in it. Luckily, you can still import the game from PlayAsia.
    • Another example of pandering to far-left is when Koei Tecmo decided to tone down the fanservice in Dead or Alive 6, because they were inspired by how modest most female character designs in modern comics are and they wanted eSports events like EVO to take it more seriously. This ultimately backfired as the game flopped hard as a result. Rather than rectifying this and adding in back the fanservice, they decided to milk the game via releasing a massive amount of skimpy outfit DLCs instead.
    • To add insult to injury some companies such as Koei Tecmo want to play is safe by doing lazy porting such as the recently released Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water being based on the censored western Wii U version on not just PlayStation, but the Non-PlayStation version all over the glob just to avoid dealing with these policies on the PlayStation systems even having a nock on effect on the non-PlayStation versions in other countries as well!

Redeeming Qualities

  1. They still have some decent titles under their hands, Berserk and the Band of Hawks is a faithful recreation to the original Berserk manga/anime, Hyrule Warriors, their first Hokuto no Ken game and the Atelier series, despite most of them being a copy-paste, are still fun to play.
  2. Some of their recent games are good like the Attack on Titan and the Nioh series.
  3. They have a great collaboration with Nintendo. Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fire Emblem Warriors (despite being the mixture of the aforementioned games in the RQ#1 and Persona 3 Portable), and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity were successful, both commercially and in the press.
  4. Unlike most (if not, all) AAA studios, they actually make their games 60 FPS on consoles (With some games as exceptions however)
